General Meeting | #3000Garagen
Normally, the members of the garage communities meet once a year to discuss their concerns. The photographer Maria Sturm brings them together this time extraordinarily and from dozens of different farms and in front of her camera. She has met over 150 people and captured them in large-format portraits. The environment in which these were recorded reveals a diversity that one might not have expected in the monotonous-looking garage landscapes. The pictures are on display in 50 Chemnitz retail stores from January to the end of April 2025.

Silberglanz & Kumpeltod | smac – Staatliches Museum für Archäologie Chemnitz
Power and wealth, groundbreaking technical innovations, but also exploitation of man and nature cast light and shadow on mining. For three and a half millennia, mining has been operated in the Erzgebirge. The exhibition shows how mining shaped the region, how knowledge was passed on and technology developed, how the environment was destroyed and how solidarity resisted the most adverse circumstances. It tells of the wealth and beauty that mining made possible, but also how it brought despair and death to many. Not everything is a thing of the past, investors are exploring deposits again. That is why the exhibition also asks what we can learn from history for our future.

Hänsel and Gretel | Mittelsächsisches Theater Freiberg
Probably the most popular fairy tale opera, the first opera experience for many children and at the same time a musical treat for connoisseurs. Engelbert Humperdinck, student and assistant of Richard Wagner, succeeded in combining seemingly incompatible opposites: a familiar fairy tale plot with melodies that survive as children's songs and demanding, multi-colored orchestral sound, great opera with romantic natural moods and dramatic human conflicts. And as in many fairy tales, good dreams finally gain the upper hand over the evil ones, and childish imagination and adventure win over need and poverty.
